Rocky Mountain Vacations

rocky mountain vacations
Rocky mountain vacations have to be some of the best vacations a person could take.

Why you ask...

Because the Rocky Mountains, especially in Colorado, are one of the most picturesque locations on earth. And Rocky Mountain National Park is the most beautiful place of all.

While the Smoky Mountains are exceptionally beautiful, the grandeur of the Colorado Rockies is unmatched in the continental United States.

Majestic snow covered peaks rise out of the plains to reach heights above 14,000 feet in the case of Long's Peak, while more than 60 other peaks rise above 12,000 feet. It is quite a sight to behold.

Within the 416 square miles of the park you can enjoy such activities as hiking, mountaineering, camping, fishing, biking, wildlife viewing and a whole host of winter activities...

Like skiing!

So the best place to enjoy your Rocky Mountain vacations are in and around Rock Mountain National Park and the community of Estes Park.

And with all the things to do in the Rock Mountain National Park area you can stay busy for a lifetime.

The picture above is what it looks like near the end of the hike up to Chasm Lake at the base of Long's Peak. It was taken while on one of our Rocky Mountain vacations.

The hike is a 9.5 mile round trip that changes in altitude from 9,000 feet to almost 12,000 feet. This is a fun, scenic hike, but it is mildly strenuous, so be well prepared with water and food.

You will likely see some wildlife as is evidenced by the friendly marmot that had lunch with us.

Once you get to Chasm Lake at the base of Long's Peak, you are in a rocky landscape that is very steep around the lake.

Once we arrived at the lake we could see people on the other side but were not that comfortable about hiking around the lake because of its steepness.

And I do mean it is steep you could easily fall in nearly anywhere around the lake. Towards the front of the lake as you are facing Long's Peak is a nice area to stop and have lunch. I want to warn you about this hike though, don't make the mistake we did. Do not forget your hiking boots. After hiking this 9.5 mile round trip I can't begin to tell you how sore our feet were. It is vitally important you have good foot support on a long hike.

I recommend the Sportsman's Guide. They have a great selection of quality hiking boots for men and women.
